The
high valley of Tevere got its name from
the historical river flowing from the
north to the south, it lies in the
middle of a ring of mountains: Massa
Trabaria, Alpe della Luna The Verna
Massif, Alpe di Catenaia, which act as
bastions to this restrained landscape
and represent landmarks for people who
are fond of natural landscapes.
The
high valley of Tevere or Valtiberina is
the most eastern side in Tuscany, for
centuries it has benn a border and
meeting point among different
civilizations: Umbrian and Etruscan,
Byzantine and Lombard. Each places in
this valley has something
characteristic, curious or precious. The
glorious past of this land can be seen
even trough the numerous ancient
buildings, hermitages, farm houses,
Parish churches and castles spread a
long this very green valley in some
points spectacular and unpolluted.
The
high valley of Tevere offers history and
art loving people important
opportunities in fact Sansepolcro and
its environs represent a historical
artistic testimony of all the ages. From
prehistorical remains to Roman and
Byzantine antiques. The Xv century
presents the climax of artistic
Biturgense fame: the Great Piero della
Francesca was successful as a painter
master of Renaissance painting, some of
his frescos are kept in the Civic Museum
(La Resurrezione, La Madonna della
Misericordia, IL San Giuliano). Besides
Sansepolcro is the birthplace to
numerous, important artists such as
Matteo di Giovanni, Raffaellino Dal
Colle, Santi di Tito, Fra Luca Pacioli,
one of the most important Renaissance
mathematicians.
The
most important feature in Sansepolcro is
the present of an imposing museum system
spread over the historical centre: Museo
Civico, Museo della Vetrata Antica,
Aboca Museum. Museo del Merletto and
several churches and buildings
containing important art pieces.
Sansepolcro
is famous in Italy and abroad to for tow
traditions: Palio della Balestra and
Sbandieratori.
The
events are preceded and followed by
parades in Renaissance costumes where
clothes inspire Piero della Francesca’s
painting.

one of the most interesting suburbs in
Italy, Caprese Michelangelo, where M.
Buonarroti was born, Pieve Santo Stefano
with its very important diary and
international archive, Monterchi and
Madonna del Parto, one of Piero della
Francesca’s most important frescos,
Sestino, Roman town hall.
This
valley is the connecting point between
Tuscany, Umbria, Marche, Emilia Romagna
and it offers easy access to famous
places such as Assisi, Gubbio, Arezzo,
Trasimeno Lake, Siena, Firenze.
